I have my motor out of the boat. I want to do a compression test. I purchased a remote momentary switch from harbor freight. I have one wire attached to the positive of the battery and the other to the positive of the coil. Now I need a wire from the yellow solenoid and connect to which?? connect yellow wire to the battery positive? or the coil positive or negative?

Dan, you do not need to excite the ignition coil while doing a compression test. In fact, you will want to disable the ignition completely.
You will be exciting the "S" terminal of the starter motor solenoid ONLY.

Remove all spark plugs, and open throttle plates.
Give each cylinder several cycles while testing.

Dan-
one wire goes to the positive battery, the other to the starter solenoid. Like ricardo said, remove all the plugs, open the throttle plates, and push the remote switch and turn the motor over 2-3 turns and record the results

When using a remote starting rig for STARTING of the engine, you need the remote MOMENTARY switch you purchased PLUS an ON/OFF switch to power the coil +.

The ON/OFF switch, one wire will go to BATTERY + the other wire will go to COIL +.

To use this to START an engine you would connect the wires as stated, turn ON the ON/OFF switch and this will apply power to the ignition, Then press your MOMENTARY remoter starter you just purchased and this will crank the engine over.

When the engine fires off (starts) release the MOMENTARY remote switch you just purchased and the motor will run untill you TURN OFF the ON/OFF switch.

Just go and buy a very CHEAP three wire key switch from wallmart or kmart or your local auto store.

On wire will be battery, one wire will be starter solenoid, one wire will be coil +
