Reinstalling ignition safety switch clip

I picked up a McKee craft that has a Johnson outboard, with omc ignition with emergency safety switch, it has a brand new ignition switch, the clip came out, I am trying to find out how to reinstall the safety clip, I was told to use pliers and pull out the small portion of the ignition switch then slid clip in place. It's a brand new switch I don't want to break it. I've tried pushing, pulling but can't get the clip reinstalled, really it can't be that hard, I just can't seem to figure it out.
Help please.

Year and hp of motor. Usually they just slide right on is it in a remote control or on the motor itself.

It's in the ignition switch on the center console.

Yes the horseshoe safety clip, this is a brand new ignition switch, but it won't slid back in, one guy at a local shop told me to grab the small part with pliers and pull, but it should not that be that much of a problem, I was thinking being a new switch, but I just don't know, my last boat never had one

Are you trying to fit the lanyard and clip to a key operated ignition switch ?

Should it not fit on a push button type of kill switch ?

I was told to pull it out, I found the instructions, it is pushed in to install clip, Got it

Got it on, it was not a pull and insert, it's a push and install
