raw water impellor blades

What happens to the pieces of the impellor blades when they break off? Where do they get caught?
If large enough, they'll end up restricting a cooling water passage.
But there's more to this:
Closed Cooling system.... or Raw Water cooling system????

Do your forensic work, and retrieve all of the pieces that you can.

.

Raw Water system.
OK.... with a RW system, these pieces could end up in many places.
Depending on the size, they could even end up in the engine block.

The worst place for them to end up, would be in any area where they can go no further. Now they become restrictive to the water flow.

if you have the twin impellor pumps..the manifold cooling vanes will be caught by the oil cooler at the rear of the engine, the engine vanes will probably get caught in the timing cover / water cross over at the front of the engine, its also advisable to pull the pipes from the water intake valve & flush out the seacock by opening it for a few seconds ( seen pieces caught in there too, waiting to be sucked into your new impellors). Single impellor pumps will have similar catch points.

If your setup is like our Crusader 454xl you might follow the cooling lines up to a U-Cooler. If this is the case, this is about the best setup you could hope for as the top of the U-Cooler has a metal screen which will catch many of these pieces. If you have this, take off the hose going into the cooler, pull out the needle nose pliers and tweezers and try to put it all back together. Good luck.

I have a chrysler 440 with a half fresh water system. After the raw water pump, the next stop is the heat exchanger. I would take off the front end cap from the heat exchanger and the pieces would be there. The can't go through the little tubes in the heat exchanger. It would act like a filter.
