"Nicholas, most likely the rewind spring is shot. If you post the model number can maybe find a source for replacement for you..."

"This motor sat in my dad's garage for 2 or 3 years. I got it to crank in 4 pulls, which is great, but it's not spitting water out of the hole that lets you know it's circulating water. I can see the water dribbling out. My question is do you think it's the impellor or something more serious? Thanks for your time!"

Basically you have a 9.9 Chrys

Basically you have a 9.9 Chrysler (who was building that model for Wards in 1983) - so the motor isn't really that old.

After sitting for a few years the impeller is probably shot and it's worth changing the gear oil as well.

Maybe throw in a new pair of plugs as well and give her a go.

Andrew who runs this site can hook you up with an Impeller Kit for less than 15 bucks - have a look at the upper right of this screen under "engine parts by brand"....

Sea King. Do you know what kin

Sea King. Do you know what kind of plugs I need? One more question is it true that I'm going to have to replace the lower unit seal when I drop it to replace the impeller? Thanks

"For plugs you can use Champio

"For plugs you can use Champion L86C's gapped at .030"

Usually you do not have to replace the lower seals when you change the impeller unless you have a water intrusion problem into the gear case.

Having said that, there are other seals (or gaskets), usually 1 or 2 associated with the pump cover and possibly one on the pump base. These are usually included in an impeller "kit" (as opposed to simply buying just the impeller) and those are worth changing since they account the majority of the problems when "only" the impeller is changed...."
