Pressure testing stern drive

"When pressure testing a stern

"When pressure testing a stern drive (290 SP) to determine if it is leaking water, is the drive pressurized with or without the oil in it? With the oil in it you would be looking for oil seeping out under pressure. Without oil in it, the drive would be immersed in water, and one would look for air bubbles. Can anyone advise which would be the proper method?

Thx."

"The oil needs to be drained.

"The oil needs to be drained. The oil can seal an otherwise compromised seal or gasket giving a false test result. This procedure is performed with the boat out of the water. The tester incorporates a pressure gauge which will indicate a drop in pressure if a leak is present. The air bubble test would work, but you would have a tough time refilling the gearcase in the water.

Good luck
Rick"
