Power Steering Pump Bracket

I have a 2007 8.1L Crusader in

I have a 2007 8.1L Crusader in my Carolina Classic that has a Mercruiser Bravo 3 outdrive on it. The Crusader engines don't come with a PS pump and one isn't available for them. the Mercruiser used a PS pump originally and provided boost to the hydraulic hynautic steering.

I think a bracket from a 7.4 would fit but I would have to relocate the fuel cell etc. Does anyone know of a junk engine that might have what I need to install one. The engine is serpentine belted.

"Do you really need the PS pum

"Do you really need the PS pump? The hynautic should handle the I/O just fine w/o the PS pump.

That's a lot of work and $$, even if you can find the needed parts used. I checked a couple (Gen V and Gen VI) 454 Merc parts listings and it isn't the same bracket for the newer 496's. You may be able to make the 454 style work but I'd be careful and measure before buying."

"It doesn't exist. Crusad

"It doesn't exist. Crusader never used a PS pump, that's why they can mount the FCC there. It can be remotely mounted to allow room for the PS pump, if done properly. You will need to buy the Merc pump bracket, then go to NAPA for the belt. Don't forget to put the cooler back on somewhere too.

Another option is the Teleflex power assist pump. It will run you about $1600-$1800 but the cost may be worth the saved aggravation. It's an easy install and they work great.

If Joe goes ahead, you saying to get the merc bracket for the 8.1, right?"

The hynautic works ok but it&#

The hynautic works ok but it's a little stiffer on the steering especially when picking up on plane from a idle. It works fine cruising and the autopilot seems to handle it ok. Just thought if I could get a bracket I would mount one on the engine.

Glad you checked Makomark. I thought they were the same. Buying a 496 Merc bracket assy would probably not be cheap.

The Teleflex unit would work great but I'm too cheap to spend the bucks for the benefit I would get.

"I haven't confirmed that

"I haven't confirmed that the old bracket won't work, but I would be surprised if it did. The 8.1 bracket will work, he just needs to make some other changes to make room for it, and find a belt that will fit. The whole front set-up is different but the right combination of parts will allow it to work."

"I'd bet on the 8.1 bracke

"I'd bet on the 8.1 bracket being the only viable path. Joe, I remember $150 and that was the bare bracket. I'd bet the pump changes (new engine, new designs, etc), so it will add up quick."
