"The pully for the power steer

"The pully for the power steering on my 1997 4.3 lx gen+ with an alpha one and a 2 brl. just broke. It was plastic 4 3/4. I would like to replace it myself, but the manual says I need the Kent-Moore J-25034 puller tool and the 91-9365A1 install kit. I am having no luck finding either of these online. Plus I read that the plastic 4 3/4 are being replaced by a metal 5 3/4 pully which will require a longer belt. What seeme}d easy is getting complicated. Can anyone help?"

Thanks for that. 100 bucks!? I can't believe that little tool is a 100 bucks. I still can't find the mercury part 91-9365A1. And should I go with the larger metal pully? Is there a cross reference to another tool that will get the pully off that I might be able to find at an auto parts store? And use their lend a tool program. I mean it is a GM engine right?

$100 not too bad for what it is...$100 = 1 hour labour around my area.

I'll bet most auto parts stores would lend the tool if you bought the pulley there - your's may have a GM part on it somewhere. I know all the front pulleys on my OMC have the GM numbers on them.(metal)
I don't anything about the metal vs. plastic thing sorry.

"I lived the same nightmare with the plastic pulley. Mercruiser did issue a recall, but unlike recalls on cars, the recall only remained in effect for a period of time. If the owner during that period never got word or never acted on it, unfortunately, mercruiser won't pay to fix it now. Nor would they pay for $1000 tow service to bring me in from 25KM out.
When you buy the serpantine belt (kit), it comes with a steel pulley.
I didn't use the special puller to get the remnants of the old hub off, I heated the hub and used a regular gear puller. Came right off. Autozone has a loaner program if you don't have a puller.
Getting the new one on required the new one to go in a 350F oven for an hour before it could be pushed on."

Did you buy the mercury

Did you buy the mercury install kit to push the new pulley onto the shaft? Also I'm having trouble finding the 5 3/4 metal pulley and belt as a kit. The 4 3/4 comes as a kit but it appears it's still a plastic pulley.

"57-861758A1 is the kit with the 4-3/4" pulley. It's the same part# I ordered (twice) and it came with a steel pulley. I don't see a kit listed that comes with a 5-3/4" pulley either. Looking at the power steering pump assembly, only a 4-3/4" pulley is listed.

I did not use the install kit to put the new pulley on. I made sure the shaft and the inside of the pulley were clean and free of nicks and burrs, heated the pulley in the oven. It took a couple 'gentle' taps with a ball-peen to get on all the way, but it's been working fine, going on 4 years now."
