Over heating???

I have a early to mid 80's suzuki outboard 9.9 kicker prop exhaust that is over heating after about ten minutes of runing, it's never been in salt water under the motor cover is very clean, somone told me it might be the water pump and told me to check the stream coming out of the motor but i'm not sure where it should be coming out? Any help?
