"I am struggling with setting up new remote+cables and notice this; With throttle cable detached , the throttle does not return to the idle stop after opening it . It seems to be because the advance thing that rotates under the flywheel is quite stiff and the throttle spring won't overcome. it
The only way it will come back to idle is by adjusting to make the throttle cable force it back, or with cable off, you apply a little force to the rotating advance thingy.
Any ideas anyone?"

"Most engines don't have a throttle return spring. The cable both pushes and pulls to put the throttle in the desired position. If you have an engine before around 1987, the spring in the middle of the throttle arm simply keeps the timing fully advanced as the throttle continues to open the carb butterflies. You should be able to move the lever with one finger. If not, something needs lube."

Thanks D. The engine is from 1

Thanks D. The engine is from 1998. I think I just have to do a better job of setting up the throttle cable so it just fully closes the throttle but no more

"The timer base under the flyw

"The timer base under the flywheel should move quite freely. You say it's stiff. Remove, clean and lubricate it properly.

No return spring is required.... the motion of the rapid rotating flywheel alone would be more than sufficent to return that timer base to its dead idle position.
