Finally got my engine to run b

Finally got my engine to run but I get the impression she is not giving me full speed. (50hp Mercury)

She already idles quite high and pretty sure the Control box is behaving correctly.

Any suggestions? or am I just expecting too much from an old engine?

I guess now is a god time to admit I know nothing about engines. I got boat and engine for a days work and Im trying to make it all work on a shoe string buget. Im learing the hard way (by my mistakes).

Dont suppose you could tell me howto do both those things in lamens terms?

"Just a little info on the boat to make you giggle (or shake your head in dispair).

When I got it, it had more holes in it than a tetly tea bag and plenty of rot around the holes.

Have broken all the rules in boat building with the use of DD grade shutter plywood, zinc coated screws and household exterior filler. I doubt she will last more than an other year or two but the paint work looks pretty and she wont sink on me. yet. Just happy to be out on the lake.

Oh yeah, The cockpit sole is a half inch ply cover sheet and the seat is a vinal car bunk seat. Very stylish. Got some orange plastic bucket seats for the back."

"with all that plywood and filler no wonder it won't go. The fuel/carbs go bad first so they need a good cleaning. remove carbs and blow with compressed air thru all jets, remove main jet from bottom of carbs(on outside of carb) and clean it. Remember no fuel thru carb means no oil to cyl(bad).
compression and spark test before buying parts.
timing base is under flywheel, when you move the shifter it rotates around crank to change timing, if it doesn't move the engine won't rev.
check these out and come back, but clean those carbs, what year merc"

you should use carb cleaner on

you should use carb cleaner on the carbs and should not use air to blow it out. any debri maybecome lodged in the jets make sure your floats are working properly}}}
