Non HD SAE oil in the crankcase?

Thumbs up or down: Non-HD oil for the old 1980, Crusader 270????

I bought a couple of cases of NAPA Purple Premium Performance Non-Detergent SAE 30 Motor Oil. Looks like API Ratings SB.

Know I have a bad feeling now… Like after I voted for Paul Wellstone… Don’t ask me why I did it!! OK, a good friend suggested it…

I realize it is MY boat and I am the captain and I need to make the decision. I probably won’t buy it again and go back to straight 30 (or older engine rated oil)

Here's one thought, from PQI:

WARNING: Importantly, the API says the use of SA, SB, SC, and SD "may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm" in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1971. Engine oil with API SA and other obsolete API service categories are not hard to find mixed in with SM on the shelves at C-stores and others. Also, don't let price or slick looking labels guide you. Engine oils with a Service Classification prior to API SM oils (including SA) are often priced close to that of SM and have labels that look good and sometimes use such words as "Premium" and others that suggest high performance.

The non-detergent formula will also let sludge built up so if you do choose to use it, don't let it sit in the pan too long.

Multi-viscosity oil is a miracle of chemistry that gives an engine the bet of both worlds: Thin oil when starting cold (to lessen oil pump drive damage), and thicker oil as the temp comes up (for obvious reasons). So, why on earth wouldn't everyone use it?

Modern oils lack ZDDP additive that keeps the flat tappet cam lobes from being wiped away. (I think your engine still has flat tappets--not sure when GM went to the roller cams.) Shell Rotella diesel oil still has what you need. I'v run it exclusively in mine for several years now. Walmart has it (cheap).

Thanks all for all the comments. And YES I am the guy from the movie.. LOL... I think I know what happened...

My bud has (2) of those Ford 427 side oilers in his 71 41' Chris Craft Commander. I bet i thought that I had older engines too.

Gunn run and find me some ZDDP Additives....

Nope. I like to keep the bilge clean as possible :)) I do find some interesting screws, nuts, and even a lifter rod. The previous owner had the valves worked on. Every few months I run the telescoping magnet tool under the engines so I can see if anything is down there.
 
In seven seasons, no matter what I drop...I ALWAYS do anything I can to retrieve it and I do...YET, i STILL continue to pull stuff out of the bilge that was dropped by who knows how many other owners and their service people. 7 YEARS and counting !
