I need to replace the starter and the Mercruiser part number is:
863007A1
My question is who makes the starters for Mercruiser and/or what are the reliable brands for a replacement starter?
Thanks in advance.

Also, there still exist little independent shops that specialize in fixing starters, generators, and alternators. Not everywhere, but there just happens to be one 10 minutes from my house. That's where I would go first if this was my problem.

Contact DB Electric if you need to replace it. My experience has been totally saitsfactory. Otherwise any auto/electric shop can repair it. Cost should be similar

If the starter got wet, then not usually worth rebuilding. I've had good luck with Sierra Aftermarket starters.
Are you SURE it's the starter.... 3 out of 4 times, it's an intermittent starter solenoid... ( usually mounted near carb)

Have it rebuilt and lube it annually, as it's supposed to be.

Was your starter not reliable? How long did it last?

Pretty sure the factory ones are made by Delco .

DB and arco are the two names you see frequently. Be careful as some aftermarket starters use shorter bolts I think this is mostly with the permanent magnet ones

If you go from a Delco direct drive style to the PMGR style make sure to use the correct length bolts. If the bolts are too long, they will not adequately clamp down the starter housing which will twist under cranking torque and can break the bolts off in the block. When I bought an ARCO starter I also bought their bolts to make sure I got the right length. The smaller PMGR starters do not use the extra brace that the old Delco style used so this is important.
