was running this weekend--thro

was running this weekend--throttling up and the engine revd high and will not go into fwd or rev. I took the prop off and the shaft wont sping in fwd or rev. Any ideas--cost??

"Sounds like a problem in the lower unit - toasted pinion gear or clutch would be initial guess - but have to get into the lower unit to know for sure - or maybe something more severe if the gear oil leaked out and was replaced by water.

Cost? depending what is wrong, the cost for parts (a pinion gear runs about 100, a forward gear closer to 200) and whatever the dealer charges for service (usually around 100/hour most places).

Really hard to say, but unless it is something quite simple, 500 bucks would be a good starting point, but could top a thousand if it's really toasted..."
