"Looking at an '84 Silvert

"Looking at an '84 Silverton Convertible with FWC Marine Power 454s. As a former sailboat guy, this is a new foray for me and I have a couple of questions. First - what is typical fuel consumption for these engines? Boat is supposed to cruise at 22 knots and plane at 18. Second - engines have a little over 1100 hours on them. As a former auto mechanic, this doesn't bother me as long as proper maintenance procedures have been followed, but am interested in any common issues that you could share concerning these engines and high hours. Third - simply, any common issues I should look for? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

"What size Silverton is this? I have a 1995 37' Convertible w/454XL throttle body injection system,and if I cruise at 17 knots, I am happy??? I have 1200 hours on the engines and I am getting ready to replace them now. I have already had to rebuild one of the engines.!"

"It's an '84 34' Convertible. Though 3 feet certainly makes a difference, am very interested in your experience. The figures I quote are from the broker, so I am defintely looking for a bit of truth here!"

according to the graph of fuel flow vs rpm at 2500 rpm 80 lbs/hr at 3500 rpm 120 lbs/hr at 4000 rpm 140 lbs/hr. The data is for a carbed motor.

"Poboy, you're gonna wish you still had that rag boat! Those are thirsty motors, and that's a heavy enough boat to drain your wallet--no way around it. Expect to burn at least 15 gallons per hour per engine at best cruising speed.

Let's all hope we dont see $3.50 to $4.00 gas again this summer.

"Jeff, you are right on the money with this one. I have a 1995 37' Silverton Convertible with 454xl's. The total fuel burn is 30 to 35 gallons per hour, depending on how many rpm's I use. 30 gallons is based on 3200 rpm's cruising speed. I usually get a little greedy and turn them up to 34 or 3500 and then I have started to go on the down side of the fuel consumption curve."
