Loss of oil pressure on newly rebuilt engine

Rode with a friend yesterday to put some hours on his newly rebuilt 350 Crusader. After starting oil pressure was a constant 65psi with normal temperature. After a 30 minute slow (1000 rpm) run to the ocean, the pressure and temperature were the same. Cruising at 2500 - 3500 rpm for about 20 more minutes when the oil pressure dropped to zero and the warning buzzer sounded. Temperature guage didn't moved.
We added a quart of 30 weight oil at the slip before departing and the oil showed on the dipstick. When we returned and checked the oil level again, it didn't show on the stick. There was no oil in the bilge and we didn't see any smoke while we were underway.
The engine this one replaced had the same problem and was just out of warranty when it failed.
Looking for ideas short of pulling this new engine.

'Fraid so. IF this motor has an oil cooler, it may be the culprit, with oil leaking into the cooling water and going out the exhaust. That would account for both the loss of oil and oil pressure.

If it is a "model 350" (454 CID), then 2X on the oil cooler, especially if it was reused and never checked.

Thanks for your response. The engine is a 350 cu. in. Crusader. I will pass on the oil cooler comment. That would explain the lack of any exhaust smoke.
