looking for an opinion regarding oil additives

Does anyone have an opinion regarding oil additives such as Lucas? I have 1992 454XL's. With 1000no hours. No problems, no oil burning. Just wonder if they are wort adding.

Modern oils don't need additives, with the possible exception of additional zinc and phosphorus which have been reduced in oils in the last decade. Modern engines have been design to accomodate this, old 454's were not, with their flat tappets, non-roller rockers, and high shear oil pumps.

When did Crusader stop utilizing the flat tappets, non roller rockers, and high shear oil pumps in their 454's?

Additives....a waste of time and money.
How could anyone tell if it gave their engine an advantage?

On older engines I add Lucas oil treatment and watch the oil pressure come up. For the 14.00 it's worth it.

I've used Lucas in automobile and bike engines. For some reason that little plastic hand-crank gear display gets me goin'.....Then I wind up bringing some home. I only know the sounds those two engines make when roaring along at 3000 rpm with the hatches open.... Even If my mufflers were quiet, it is still significantly greater than any car or bike engine I know of. Gotta be some real friction developing SOMEWHERE ! Their Lucas synthetic version is near double the cost. With what I have heard about synthetics and the results of my own F-150, 262,000 mi so far...I hesitate to go and add an additive to what appears to be working so well on it's own. But I guess THAT is where the debate begins

How about "Marvel Mystery Oil" ....it's been a mystery for at least 80 years and some people love it...maybe a marvel of marketing?

I think I found Delo an option... $12 a gal at Walmart and Delo 400 LE 15w40 has the zinc and phospous levels we need to for flat tappets, non roller rockers, so no additives needed.

PS somone can confirm the "1300ppm" is same as "wt % .13"

I don't believe that formula works out to the same number but I see one as weight and one as volume. WalMart has some great prices on Mobil 1. I 've been buying Mobil 1 for all the cars for years. The 5 qt jug is $25.00 and $36 down the road at Pep Boys Between the boat and 3 vehicles I guess we go thru 16-18 jugs a year.

Yep. Move the decimal point over 4 places to convert ppm to %. Units should be be weight, I suspect.

I 've been buying Mobil 1 for all the cars for years.

Take a look at the mobil 1 specs page I found. Most are falling short of the zinc ppm needs for our old flat tappet engines. Looks like the 15w50 or racing grades meet our needs but cannot find near home.

SAE 50 is a bit thick. Look at the Amsoil AMO, 10W40. Not the most cost effective, but seems to have the right stuff.

Can that Eastman ZDDP be added to synthetuc oil to "boost" it or will it change the charactistics of the synthetic oil in a detrimental way
