Kill switch install 74' 9.9 Johnson

Hi,

First post here but have read great posts here from the past. My motor is a 1974 johnson 9.9 and have owned it for 15 years. This motor is in excellent condition and like to keep it that way.

I would like to install a kill switch with a lanyard for obvious safety reasons. The 74' just has the push to stop buttom that I wish to remove and install my aftermarket part. I have no idea where to start and if someone has been down this road could you please assist? I have a picture with how it's routed and if anyone could help me I'd be most grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Note: Leeroys website talks very briefly about the switch and says to use Sea Dog 420488-1 not sure if that's the only kill switch that will work.

Yep, I did that on a 1979 and used a universal switch similar (if not exact) to the Sea Dog unit. All the stop switch does is ground out the ignition to kill spark. Connect your 2 existing wires to the terminals that are OPEN when the lanyard is in place but are CLOSED when the lanyard is removed or the button is pushed. It's just that easy. I had to slightly modify the hole from the original stop button, but it wasn't much and I used a stainless fender washer on the outside where the plastic jam nut secures the new kill switch.

Thanks a lot. Way easier than I anticipated. I didn't have to modify the existing hole with the style of kill switch I got just had to use a washer that was pre-existing and done.
