Johnson VRO 50 running and idling problems.

Starting a new thread here after my previous one was wrongly titled!
I have a Johnson VRO 50 with an unknown history. compression seems to be good and even on both cylinders. the spark is good on both plugs and the fuel is pumping and filling both the float chambers. I seem to be able to get it to start and run but not idle. It is very uneven as I increase the revs which I can do by closing the choke and quickly increasing the throttle fairly high. The fuel primer also seems to have a major influence on the running. With it around half way it runs best. I cleaned the carbs today with no change. I'm not sure if the timing is correct or if the choke is set properly. However my knowledge from car engines leads me to believe they are. Sometimes it won't start and if I close the primer it starts but with same symtoms as before. any thoughts? hoping to have it fixed for the weekend:)

Timing is fixed and does not change as a rule.--------------------You have checked the flywheel key ??--------------Did you take the highspeed jet out of the bowl for cleaning???-------If you have to leave the fuel primer half open you have fuel issues.-------------Revisit cleaning of the carburetors !!

Carburetors MUST BE TAKEN APART for proper cleaning.----------------------Pull the flywheel, if key is good then re-install and torque the flywheel nut.

carbs taken apart cleaned and flywheel checked. Not a big difference however I began adjusting the timing advance and it was completely wrong. Know I can almost get it to idle!!! A few tweeks here and there and we'll be ok I think. Waiting till I've changed the waterpump though ;-) Any thoughts about which spark plug to use on this engine?
