Improper timing and engine temp.

As I read posts pertaining to high operating temps in Mercs with a closed cooling system, such as the 470 models, improper timing is never given as a possible problem. It often and rightfully so goes toward impellers, heat exchangers etc. I know we don't deal with a vacuum advance but if you don't get an older auto engine timed up correctly it will run hot. Would this hold true for the 470 line of Mercruisers?

Yes it would!

It is important if running the original points ignition to have the poit gap (dwell) set to spec and the timing set 2 degree less than spec. I believe the timimg spec was 6 Degrees BTDC, Merc released a bulliten way back in the day to set to 4 degree BTDC due to so preignition issues and other motor failure issues with that motor.
