How to hold flywheel while doing torque

I have a 1980 35HP Evinrude. Does anybody have a trick for holding the flywheel while doing 105# of torque?

I see they make a special holder but I don't have one.

Any help appreciated.

Check with your automotive parts store... ask about a flywheel turning tool that mechanics use to turn the flywheel when installing a clutch and pressure plate on a standard shift automobile. We refer to it as a spanner wrench.

The one pictured here is a Snap On tool. The curved portion I had to heat and bend slightly so that it would fit all of the hp flywheels (different diameters). You may not need to bother with the heat and bend part.

In the lawn mower world, they often just pull a spark plug and move the piston to the bottom of the stoke and push clean 1/4 " nylon rope down into the whole and then when its full turn the the flywheel so that it traps the rope and the piston can't turn and do your torqing, just used that method last week on a Briggs motor to torque the flywheel to 150 ft lbs and it works slick ( It really Works) Be sure to remove the rope after the flywheel is tight :)
