Honda BF25 stalling

Hi, I got this engine last year, ran great, end of year changed the engine oil, plugs, and lower unit oil. started in driveway no problem. Launched boat, started stalling at idle when trying to shift into gear. finally got it into gear, drove to dock, both forward and reverse worked. went back down to boat, started no problem, stalled going into gear. finally got it into gear, got out into harbor to open up, engine was a little hesitant, not as quick to get up to speed as last year, then it stalled again. same issue, starts, stalls going into gear. let engine rest a bit, and then was able to get into gear and get home. My first thought is the gas is about 2 months old so getting fresh gas tomorrow. I have no non ethenol options here, so I usually get the 93 octain. beyond that, anything I hsould be looking for? Again it ran great last year, last year was the first year with this engine. Thanks as always for any suggestions.

nope. have never done that. Do you mean pull the gas line and run the engine dry?

Im gonna bring fresh gas down tomorrow, and check the engine fuel filter for debris and water. That was not part of my winterization and now im wondering if it should have been.
