high rpms in neural after carb clean

I recently cleaned the carburetor’s on my 1981 johnson 60hp. Gave them a chemical bath, cleaned them out, and installed everything in the repair kit. i did not mess with any idle screws or anything because the boat was running perfect beforehand, but when i reinstalled my carburetors and went to test everything it sounded like my engine was running wide open in neutral. i pulled the air box off and looked inside the carbs and the butterflies looked good, and i could get the engine to idle by choking down the carbs a little. i checked for a leak around the manifold as well and have a solid seal. any ideas on what this issue could be or what i did wrong? engine was running great before just began to have some stalling issues while idling and issues starting prior to the carb clean.

Check to make sure both throttle plates are closed at idle.----Check flywheel key.----And post actual compression values to look into the stalling issues that prompted you to look into the carburetors.

both throttle plates are closed, i checked that, and i’ll check the flywheel key tomorrow.

Running wide open at idle is usually a lean condition, so you may have a leak somewhere. Did you spray anything around the manifold gaskets to check for a "solid seal"? You could hose them down with fogging oil and if the RPM momentarily drops that will tell you a gasket is bad or the carb isn't properly seated.

Are you sure the butterflies are fully closed? You can disconnect the carbs from the throttle linkage if they are slightly open and see if they shut. If they are cracked open you'll need to find out where the linkage is binding or out of adjustment and correct that.

well my friend, turns out the butterflies are indeed my issue. what you just said hit me around 4 am Saturday after my daughter woke me up to use the restroom and drove me crazy.

realized i did indeed loosen the top carb linkage in the process of pulling them off, so i took my throttle linkage off, had my dad turn it over and i manually adjusted the rollers with my fingers about a millimeter if that and she purred like a kitten. Now i’m just looking at the pain of getting them synched perfectly. thanks for the help!
