High idle after running

After long runs or a full day

After long runs or a full day out my starboard motor (1988 454) stays at a high idle of 800-1000rpm. Have tried adjusting idle screws per manual but no luck. Thought was a transmission problem as was banging in and out of gear when shifting say when docking.

Finally noticed the high idle which seems to be the problem but only occurs when engine is good and warm/hot. Where should I start?

Thanks

"I had a similar problem with idle. I had my carb rebuilt and it resolved a lot of problems. It seems that the gasoline degrades over time and leaves a varnish type material in the carb that restricts jets and otherwise gums up the works.

I am not sure, maybe someone else has some experience with carb cleaner. My last experience was that it was too far gone to help.

I paid $250 but was very satisfied with the results.

for temp fix lube all the carb

for temp fix lube all the carburator fittings.

Carb Rebuild may be the answer. warn bushing surfaces.

"I replaced the distributor, I wanted to upgrade to electronic anyway. You could maybe take it apart and clean it up and free up the stuck parts. I started out doing that then decided new was a better idea."

I'll bet you have a 's

I'll bet you have a 'slow flood' condition. When you finish a run it's not flooded (for a few minutes) and runs at a higher rpm. Seen this many times.

Suggest you rebuild the carb.
