HELP!!!

Alright, I bought a boat this summer. It ran great when I got it but developed a dead miss @ WOT. The miss proceeded to get worse to the point I took it in to get looked at by the local marina when I could not go over idle. After 1 month of him working on it I finally go it back with rebuilt carb, new water pump & impeller, new power pack, and plugs. Problem not solved. Add to that it now has a high pitched squeal when I power up to about 1/2 throttle. Each time I heard the squeal I would shut down and it would start up fine and seemed to be running fine at first but began missing again. My thought is I am going to take it to a better established marina this time and let them diaganos this for me.

I can't find anything in my manual or on the web that talks about the high pitched chatter/squeal. Any of you guys have an idea on what that could be?

My motor is a 1996 2-stroke 30hp outboard if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Found another place that indicated it was most likely the camshaft.... basically sounds like a belt whine. Any advice out there?

I would check your compression first and see if one of your cylinders is low. It sounds like your local marina did a lot of work that had nothing to do with the original problem. Any time a motor is not running right the pros on this forum tell you to check your compression first, them your spark.

Yep, sounds like a camshaft issue. Compression check will probably show one or more cylinders out of wack. My guess.... camshaft key broke and allowed the timing gear to slip.

The compression was 115 in one cyl and 100 in the other cyl. After the local marina having it for 2 weeks and into too far already the owner let me know he is more of an inboard mechanic than outboard:mad: I was pretty floored at that point. It was one of those moments that you weigh your options... In the meantime I bought a repair manual and began looking around the net for places like this! The next closest outboard mechanic is 30+ miles one way and I just didn't want to go that far...in retrospect...ah well.

I have the lower unit pulled and getting myself prepped for teardown and diagnosis. I wouldn't even consider myself a shadetree mech but I have turned a few wrenches and stumbled my way through a few projects. The "pro" mech drained my project funds so I am going to have to do this all on my own and hopefully cheap(ish).

I am sure I will be back for more advice! Any other good resources or advice is always welcome!

Thanks, Ryan

On a 2 stroke there is no camshaft, no valves and no timing gear. Just a flywheel that handles the timing and that is keyed to the crankshaft. Usually like to see a little more balanced compression, could be caused by worn rings worn cylinder or scored/scratched cylinder. As far as the squeal, its hard to say without hearing it for myself. It could be simple or complicated. Does it happen only at half throttle? what kind of load on the motor is there. the starter might not be disengaging, flywheel rubbing on something, a seal dried up. you could get a mechanics stethascope (spelling?) and try to pinpoint the noise. Best of luck.

A little confusing and somewhat amusing thread - camshaft on a 2-stroke?
But need a bit more info.
Electric or manual start or both?
Remote controlled or tiller?
When you say 'missing' is the revs dropping to around 3000rpm?
If possible state the model number from the tag on the port engine bracket.

OK I misspoke should have typed crankshaft. You mean they are not the same thing:) like I said I am not much of a mechanic! It is both electric and manual start with a tiller control.

Before I took it in to the local pro it would miss out and the revs would drop until I killed it or it would die. I'd restart it and it would run fine until it began missing out. I was thinking the flywheel rubbing since the guy took that off. I found a loose nut that he didn't tighten down around the flywheel but not sure if that had any impact on it or not. I have the motor on 16 foot jon boat with plywood floors and it was just me and my 4 year old son in the boat. It didn't make the noise until it got up to about half throttle so I just idled back to the ramp. When I would creep up to the 1/2 throttle it would squeal again. Sounded just like a belt whine. All I know is it isn't normal to hear that and I have no extra money to be paying a local pro...so here I go!

I will get the model number for you here in a bit. Thanks!

Do you have an alarm horn somewhere?
Some of those engines were delivered with a separate alarm module activated by the temp switch.
When sound came on, did the engine drop in rpm??

I had a 1974 doing about the same,Replaced the RING, Ignition plate to support. It was worn and sloppy. It could be yours letting the RETAINER & LINK ASSY. move abit.Try moving the RETAINER & LINK ASSY. by hand see if there is some slop there.Your cam throttle control is connected to it.If its binding on that ring it may produce a squeel at higher RPMs

Mod # is E30RCED the electric starter was added on at a later date.

No alarm horn that I have found yet. Not saying it isn't disabled but I have not heard any horns or alarms. On past motors I have had oil level alarms that would beep when I started the motor or when it was triggered due to wave action or low oil levels but not on my current motor. I have to mix the gas in the tank.

I will drain the lower unit oil and see what it looks like.

Thanks for the advice. I am getting ready to go mess around with it here in a few minutes so I will post an update this evening.

OK, drained the oil and it looked OK, a tad bit milky but not real bad. No metal parts/shaving present. Put the lower unit back on and put it in a tank. Started up OK but the water pump wasn't pulling water so I shut it back down...I am going to wait for some $$$ and just have a more reputable mechanic look at it or get another motor. I am just beat down with frustration right now and lack the confidence to tear into it too much.

Thanks for the help/advice.

No I didn't I pulled the l/u to change the oil, I pulled it yesterday thinking I would find something and curiosity on my part!

I thought it was lined up but that is also what I am assuming why it wasn't pumping water and basically I didn't feel like messing with it any more today. If I feel like it I will pull the l/u off again and make sure it was lined up. Thanks, Ryan
