heating bearing before installation

did the factory install the bearing by heating it and then pressing it on?

I would appreciate some help on assemble of the upper bearing housing.

I am trying to press the upper pinion bearing on the gear shaft.

The bearing only goes to about 1/8 from the gear. I tried heating the bearing to 250 degrees and freezing the shaft. It still won't press and make contact with the gear.

The bearing is 18-1161 sierra , replaces omc 983891. Which is the part # in the omc parts catalog.

The sterndrive lower unit model is 984542 , s/n T0484656.

I am using a 20 ton press and it removes the bearing.

Is the bearing only supposed to press so far and not contact the gear.? Could the problem be someone used a different year upper unit on the old lower unit?

As I recall on disassembly the bearing didn't contact the gear and I was able to use a bearing separator which fit in the space about 1/8 inch.
