"How about NAPA carb cleaner? Fill it up and let iut sit overnight, then hose it out. Safe for the metals used, but the paint will be removed if it gets on it.

Costs about 20 bucks a gallon.

A mild acid solution is most effective. I would consider taking it to a radiator shop and having it dipped. Can't cost much and you will be surprised at the results.

Mild acid is the only way to clean. Radiator shop is good but no reason you cant do it yourself. I clean mine in place. hook up a hose to a spare bildge pump and put it in a bucket with 50-50 muratic acid and water. hook hose to exchanger and put another hose on it for discharge and back into the bucket. turn it on and let it run until the return line quits foaming. Rinse immediately with fresh water. Flush it very well. Do your oil cooler the same way. I did risers and elbows this way but it was more difficlt to remove the exhaust hose and put it in the bucket for the return.
