"I recently purchased a 1990 Carver 32 mariner with twin Crusader T270 inboard engines. At certain RPMs, the resonation of the exhaust is almost unbearable, while other RPMs are not. Question: Is this common on the Crusader exhaust or is it possibly the swim platform, for examble, is vibrating/resonating at certain RPMs because the exhaust noise is trapped? Also, is it possible to elbow the exhaust into the water without engine damage?"

"Stan,

The "Crusader&#3

"Stan,

The "Crusader" exhaust system ends at the exhaust manifolds. From there out it is Carver's system. Yes , it is possible to reroute the exhaust underwater, but I wouldn't do that without doing some research. Call Carver and see if they are aware of the situation. They may have updated the system on this model and may be able to guide you regarding doing this to your boat.

Drop rate and back pressure are very crucial in marine exhaust and modifying things without considering the effect of your changes on these items may result in undesirable results (water ingestion).

Many manufacturers have gone with underwater exhaust in recent years, but it is not as simple as just putting a downspout on your exhaust outlet.

Good luck,
Rick"

"Try this (if your exhaust

"Try this (if your exhaust pipes are exposed): Buy some rubber flappers and install them. My engines are much quieter with them, thought that was not there original purpose (which is keep wakes ffom running up the pipes).

"CRUSADER EXHAUSTS RESONATING/VIBRATING
Rick and Jeff, thanks for the input on the resonating problem of the swim platform. I checked the Crusader specs on exhaust back pressure and they recommend a maximum of 4 in. of mercury as measured with a manometer. Therefore I'll not be installing elbows on the exhausts. I have emailed Carver on the resonating problem, but have received no reply, which is par for the course on a boat this age.
I did notice that the swim platform is held by nine bolts along the outside peremiter (in groups of three) so I'm wondering if the platform is vibrating in the middle, or if there are bolts hidden beneath the platform.
Maybe I'll just wear ear plugs.
Thanks again, Stan"

"Oh! Almost forgot. The exhaus

"Oh! Almost forgot. The exhausts do have rubber flaps installed, either by Carver or the previous owner. Maybe that was a Carver fix that didn't work, although I can't imagine the noise without them.
