Exhaust gasket question

I had to replace a shift handle on my 1962 Johnson 5.5 hp outboard.
I am replacing the exhaust/water jacket gasket and want to know if I should use a high temperature gasket sealant along with the new gasket?

Yes, good idea anyway. Temp there should never go above 200F. Has the head gasket been replaced yet. If not....a " must do".

What Tim said pertaining to the powerhead base gasket.... Gasket Sealing compound, comes in a can, has a brush on its screw off cap, available at any auto parts store.
