I have a 76 Evinrude 85 hp and the starter solenoid went out. Will a Ford Solenoid work as a replacement? They look the same.
Thanks in advance'

"Looks exactly the same? Not the ford solenoids that I see, and I have two Fords sitting in the driveway.

NO! Don't go that route. Bite the bullet and install the solenoid that belongs on that engine."

The solenoid I am looking at came off a Ford pickup and it is exactly the same. 2 cable posts and 2 smaller ones on the side. You must have real new Fords because all the Ford selenoids I have used have been like this. The only 'rude selenoid I can find has to be ordered and it will take several days to ship. I need it running yesterday...lol

"Very surprised than an automotive solenoid would be the same as an outboard one.

However if they look the same and the Ford one can be fitted and wired up it'll do the job. Its only a magnetically operated switch. (Ford one is 12 volt?)

Should have fitted it yesterday

"If it fits, and it is 12v, it should work. It does the same function on a car that it will do on your motor and won't know the difference."

All of the Ford solenoids that I'm familiar with had a metal mounting bracket that was actually attached to the solenoid.
