Can anyone tell me where or how I stop water from getting into the lower unit gear oil? I don't want to try to open up the lower unit without a clue and be stumped.
I guess I'm wondering how many seals or "O" rings am I looking to examine?

There are only (2) seals on that Lower Unit...
One at the driveshaft as it enters the lower housing, and one just behind the prop.

I'll get my manual and post a pic.. give me a few minutes...

Daytona_Sportfour,

Thank you for your efforts. The picture is great and I am relieved to discover thanks to you, the project might not be too difficult. Now I'm just wondering where to find replacement seals...

Order them here at Marineengine.com..
Their interactive catalog only goes back to 1955.. but the JW-11 has the same gearcase assembly as yours (used until 1963). Just look up the seals, o-rings, and impeller by part number. I did a quick look and they are pretty cheap- $12 impeller, about $1 each on the o-rings $4-$5 for the seals..
