Evinrude 200 vs 225

Hi there all.

Got a bit of an odd question. Im wanting to know how much heavier a 225hp XL 25" is apposed to a 200hp L 20" ? (both Evinrudes).

Cheers

welcome to marineengine.

i wouldnt think there would be much difference.

the difference comes into play when you hang a 225 on a boat rated for a 200...............most states have outlawed this "overpowering".

i wanted to overpower mine too.........you know go faster with more people in the boat.

overpowering can also be dangerous if you start chinewalking.......the 2 usually go hand in hand.

"Strangely enough, directly fr

"Strangely enough, directly from the Evinrude service manual for a 1996 E200STLED,
the weight is 450lbs.
The weight listed for the TX model is 455lbs.
I would think there would be more than 5 lbs. difference.
The manual covers both the 200 and 225 as essentially the same motor."

"Put the 225 carbs on a 200 powerhead, and use your 200 engine hood.

No one will know the difference."

"its not going to give that mu

"its not going to give that much more get go,and will only cost you more to feed it,but go for it
anyway.as far as switching covers and carbs,
i have not met an enviromental police officer
that has ever looked at the serial #s on my outboard ever."

"So essentialy, The 200 and 22

"So essentialy, The 200 and 225 are the same engine except that the 225 uses larger carbs? So as Doug said, the only difference would be in the 5" of extra trunk?"

"If you study the BRP parts list, you can really gain insight on what they did from year to year and model to model.

I have very meticulously studied the parts lists for the 1996 200 vs. the 1998 225. I have checked and checked and checked. Notice the two different years I am comparing.

I can see no SIGNIFICANT difference in the powerhead, exhaust adapter.

A SIGNIFICANT difference is the carbs. I have not measured the venturi bores, but I do know they use different size main jets between the 200(#65D) and the 225 (#72D). And, they use different spark plugs.
And, the reed blocks are a different part number.
This could be just a mfg. change that caused a PN change...i.e. they could be essentially the same reeds.

If there are any other SIGNIFICANT differences, I have not found them yet.

But, if you compare the 200 vs. the 225 for the SAME year....even fewer PN differences.

I have come to the conclusion that the only real difference is the carbs."

"callum,
have you checked yo

"callum,
have you checked your local laws to find out if the is legal?

why do you want to put a 25" shaft in place of your 20" shaft?............or are you thinking of switching power heads and using the 225hp power head with the 200hp hood/exhaust housing?"

"David,

I blew my 1996 200

"David,

I blew my 1996 200 powerhead as you may remember. I have posted many times on the problem. It was on a 20" shaft.
I located a used 225, 1998, but it had a 25" shaft.
So, I did the studying, and put the 225 powerhead on my 20". Worked fine.
That is why I did it, and I don't care much about the laws, by the way. Callum appears to be in Australia. Any laws down under?"

thats pretty cool!

how much

thats pretty cool!

how much difference did the extra 25 make?.....is it really just a few mph or a bunch?.......better hole shot?

and yeah i just remembered your threads.......im blonde what can i say!

"Well...I sorta left out a step in order to be brief.
Powerhead 1 = Original 1996 200 hp. Burned up for unknown reasons.

Powerhead 2 = Used 1996 200 hp...which I burned up by failing to switch the fuel selector valve to the tank with the pre-mix in it. So that one doesn't count!! LOL. (That would have worked fine had it not been for the DUMBASS stamped on my forehead that day.)

Powerhead 3 = Used 1998 225. I have it on, and running. I have it in the tank, and this time I am gonna go thru the carbs, ignition, fuel pump and delivery...the whole nine yards.

So, I don't know what the performance difference will be yet.

I am even crazy enough....to do this....

I found a used 1986 300 HP V8....I wonder if...."

"Woooooooooooooh fella's.

"Woooooooooooooh fella's.

It would appear that Ive found some power hungry freeks amongst the wranks. (like me)

Doug, im of the same opinion. They can jam the laws/regulations fair and square up their....... However on the same note, Ive never ever seen anyones motors come under scrutiny. A V8 2 stroke ay, Id love to be in a boat with one of those on. Their a nice looking bit of machinery.

Ive just sold a boat with a 20" 200 Evin which worked well on the boat (water level etc) and have baught another boat without a motor. Ive been given the chance to buy a 25" 225 and wanted to know the difference in weight to see if it would dramaticaly weigh down the rear end. From my own opinion and that of all of yours, i dont think its gonna make much difference. (i like experamenting.

Thanks again gents."

"Callum...

That 300 V8 is not going to be possible.

It is a 25" shaft and I must have a 20".
I guess I could use a jackplate, though.

Also, I have looked into the powerhead swap issue (V8 head on a V6 Bottom) and it cannot be done. Too many differences in the exhaust adapter and midsection...

So, just a dream.

Good luck in your motor selection."

"i have two identical boats, one with 235s, one with 300s. 42 mph and 65 mph. it is my understanding that the v6 lower unit will work on the v8. just may not live as long. check with "scream and fly"."
