Electric fuel pump

I am about to install an holley electric fuel pump and looking at the install instructions it states that it must be mounted below the tank as the pump is designed to pump not draw fuel??????????
Of course, this is not possible on most boats.
Can anyone who has installed electric fuel pumps tell me what the vertical distance from floor of fuel tank to pump inlet on thier installations.

the fuel pump can be level with the tank, but it must be as close to the tank as possible. it is also a real good idea to install a fuel regulator in front of the carb. hitting waves, can cause the fuel pump to temporarily flood the carb as the float bounces.
