Diagnostic Scanner

Hi guys, I was doing some work on my Propshaft and had to remove some wires. When I finished, the starter wouldn’t engage

I have a 2095 Captains Chiice 5.7 MPI.

Power to starter and the ignition is good. (Did the screwdriver test crossing terminals on the starter solenoid. Solenoid engaged)
Also tested the neutral switch on the transmission.

If I had a diagnostic scanner, it might show me where the problem is. Does anyone know if there is a BDG coda reader that works with this engine? I could purchase a TecMate Pro for about $800, but no guarantee it would work.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

What year?

There’s a place on eBay that rents out a diacom scanner system that would work on the plug type you have…Also, though they pop up from time to time, there’s a tech pro listed at 400.00 which is a decent deal at probably $150.00ish off from new with say just one adapter that’s usually offered to fit certain older engine models … some newer adapters/engines can get close to $300.00 a adapter each making a kit pretty pricey.

This mentioned, did the engine start or try to start when bypassing? If it’s a no start condition such as no spark, or wiring unplugged still, no fuel, etc. then using a scanner may not tell the whole story of possibilities you are seeking so don’t be too discouraged if that turns out to be the case in this situation… sometimes the scanner may tell what’s right vs what’s wrong if that makes any sense.

Couldn’t edit in above a how to check engine codes using a multimeter video if needed or desired on your should be type ECM.

I don't think the scanner is gonna help you resolve a "starter doesn't engage" issue....

I'd start at the slave solenoid...it could be the ground wire for it didn't get reconnected...

I’ll have to try to start it bypassing the control module. As mentioned, I got it to “Click” heartily, it didn’t let it turn over. Need to connect water and actually try to start it.

Thanks for the reply.

You’re right, chances are the scanner won’t help in a “starter” situation with the engine not running. I’d hate to think it is the control module. $$$

I’m having a marine mechanic check it out next Friday, but I sure would like to diagnose it myself (with your assistance)😏

what gave you the 'click'?

which terminals did you short at the starter doing your 'screwdriver test'? assuming the starter's solenoid engaged, the engine cranked over?

Sounds like a tricky one—maybe double-check all the wiring you removed and any ground connections. For a scanner, you could look for a BDG-compatible reader or a generic MPI diagnostic tool that supports 5.7 engines before investing in the TecMate.

Boat owners on the MarineEngine forum often seek reliable diagnostic scanners to keep their engines running smoothly. Whether it’s for a MerCruiser or Honda outboard, having the right tool is key to identifying issues early and ensuring optimal performance. In a similar way, wellness apps like https://wellness-app.com/ provide essential tools for personal health. Their online fasting tracker helps users monitor fasting periods, stay consistent, and track progress toward their wellness goals. Just like diagnostic scanners help maintain boat engines, fasting trackers support users in maintaining their health routines effectively.
