"I recently purchased a 83 silverton w/ 3 yr old crusader 270's. The previous owner says he ran straight SAE30 Castrol Syntech in it. I cannot find it anywhere. Would this make sense? What should I use now? If anyone can help me out, I sure would appreciate it! Thanks"

I'd suggest the 20w-50 ful

I'd suggest the 20w-50 full synthetic mobil 1. It been good to my engines for 20 years now.

"The way I see it, these old design engines are thick oil machines, not like my closely fitted Honda, running a 5W-20 even in the summer. The GM BB have reasonably high bearing clearances and have a high shear valve train. So, in a fully warmed up engine, SAE40 is what they want. However, cold starts in your mid-Atlantic states will want to see a thinner oil at start-up, this is why the manual calls for SAE30 under 70 deg. If I were you, I'd run a branded synthetic around 10W40 or so. I personally run a straight 40, but I'm down south and almost never start with a crank temp. under 70 deg..."
