correct motor oil

Seems like a simple question, I realize, but I want to be sure which type of motor oil to put in my Honda 50 when I winterize it in a few weeks. The manual says 5W-30, but do I use just any ordinary automotive oil or something made exclusively for marine use? Synthetic or non-synthetic? Thanks!

Outboard motors are " hard working machines " so see your dealer and get the best oil for it.-----------Marine use is suggested by me.--------------Use the proper oil as overhauling these 4 strokes is far more expensive ( than a 2 stroke )and often not worth doing due to the number and cost of parts.

If you change your oil regularly IAW the maintenance schedule, then just about any oil with an API rating of SG or higher will do. There is a lot of hype about motor oils, and most of it is not warranted. The API standard is the key thing. For example, Toyota and Honda "Factory" motor oil is made by Mobil. Mobil uses their Mobil Clean formula (not to be confused with Mobil Drive Clean 5000 which is higher priced) and packages it in drums and bulk. Mobil's own literature terms this oil as "a entry level oil." The same Mobil oil is also the GM Goodwrench oil. I would not waste my money on synthetic if you are strict about changing oil every 100 hours, or every season, whichever comes first.
