" I have purchased an older boat w/1969 Johnson 40EL 69R.The previous owner said it hasn't run in 2 years.I am trying to start it and I get a very weak spark.How can I check the coils?Also, what is the correct spark plug?

This is all new to me,never had a boat before.

" By the late 1960s, Johnrude had the more reliable coils as standard issue on the small twins and they generally don't go bad. More than likely your points are dirty or corroded, or your condensers are bad. Two sets of each come in NAPA's tune-up kit, part #18-5002. Set the points at .020" with the fiber point rider lined up with the flywheel key.

The contacts on the points are clean, smooth, and set at .020"(look new).There are no visable cracks on the coils, but I have not removed them. I would need some kind of special tool to reinstall them... correct?
Is there a simple way to test the coils and condensers? I have an inexpensive multi-tester.

There is a special tool to li

There is a special tool to line up the coils . If you take special note of how the laminations line up with the boss on the mag plate it can be done without the tool.
