Cobra shifts?

88' OMC 5.0L Cobra. Last year I removed my outdrive and replaced the exhaust and U-joint bellows. While I was there I did the shift cable adjustment procedure that the Stuart Hastings website calls out. My problem is I am still getting a quick little grind when going into forward from neutral. I just did a pertronix upgrade with the new (CDI) ESA. The ESA is functioning properly and my idle rpm is at 650. Any ideas on why im getting the grinding??
Thanks

You may want to bring down the idle to 600 in the water, warm motor in gear.

You shifting slow ? Maybe to slow ? You have to shift fast, not slam it but firm handed. Then throttle up slowly but firmly.

If this is a GM engine, then look to the strbd side of the carb at the throttle linkage to check if shift interrupter tang and it's end roller are still in place. The roller broke off mine and it will NOT work without the tiny roller in place. The interrupter and overstroke switch are wired together permanently and are sold as one unit. About $110.00 from a former OMC dealer's parts room. These are getting scarce. I got the last one that RFM Marine in Amesbury, Mass. had. These are adjustable as long as it is all there. Adjusting is self explanatory.

Maybe you need a tiny bit more stroke on the cable going into gear. Loosen the nut on the shift arm and slide it down a smidge. Not very Stuart-like but it'll work.
