Classic 50 Voltage Output

Hi Everyone, I have an old(ish) Classic 50 outboard that runs great. The problem im having, is getting it to produce a usable voltage to charge the battery on my boat (for lights, radio, bilge etc).

On idle, the output measures at 24-25V DC... Half throttle measures 50-60V DC, and Full throttle measures in at 80-85V DC...

Now, how would i regulate and drop the voltage, with such a high and varied output from the engine...? Or do I have a more fundemental problem...?

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Just ran one yesterday----------At idle it measures 13.6 volts at the battery terminals.---------Not sure how you get the readings you posted.

those readings are directly from the output of the rectifier... i havn't got a battery in the loop, as i was concerned about the high voltages...

what you are seeing is no load on the rectifier....so you are seeing is whatever the stator puts out...no load is no current and no voltage drop....i have never run one like that but would expect weird high readings..
