I have a 1978 55 hp evinrude and it is bypass or leaking fuel and only runs at 50 to 75 % of wot The rpms go up and down and I checked the compression and #1 is 150 and #2 is 145.When it is at idle u can see the fuel coming from the carbs. When I first bought the boat 4 months ago it ran great. One thing the previous owner ran low grade fuel and i am running high grade. Is a carb rebuild or reed replacement in order.

I would rebuild the carbs more

I would rebuild the carbs more than likely you have a bad gasket. when you have the carb off check your reed valves also check all fuel lines make sure there are no cracks in them. Thats where I would start. I was told you can check the reed valves by having just a dental mirror and a small pick just be careful when doing this.

"If with the engine NOT RUNNIN

"If with the engine NOT RUNNING, and the fuel primer bulb is pumped up hard, fuel flows from the carburetor(s), they definitely require cleaning and rebuilding.

Spark..... On that model, with the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

Use a regular octane rating, usually 87. Anything higher is just a waste of money.

thanks for the info I am going

thanks for the info I am going to do what was suggested and thanks for the tip on the fuel and one question on the fuel .What about this 10 % ethanol .Will it hurt these older models? Thanks again and I will let u know the results

"Randy.... Pertaining to the f

"Randy.... Pertaining to the fuel system, thru the years, gaskets etc have been improved to handle the ethanol. It's highly unlikely that anything on that engine will be affected by ethanol. The older gaskets were black in color.... the newer gaskets are somewhat of a tan color."

"Well just got in from checkin

"Well just got in from checking the carbs by pumping the bulb and watching the carbs and low and behold there was a pin hole in the fuel line right next to the carb and the connector at the tank was by passing .Fixed all of that and changed the plugs and it runs like a champ sitting in the shop .Will take it to the lake tomorrow and see what it does. Thanks everyone for your help , Will let you know how it runs out tomorrow"
