"Need to unhook the cable from the shift converter at the back of the motor. Take the cover off, push the cable in and put a cotter pin or small nail in the side where it enters the converter box. You will see it, there is a small hole to slide for a pin to slide through to take the tension off the cable. Then undo it from the pulleys and pull it out. Make sure you disconnect the battery before doing anything. Then, you want to raise the drive all the way. There is a clip and small bolt holding the clip in place on the intermediate. Remove it. Now is the fun part. Push and pull on the cable until it loosens. This is the most challenging part. That sucker is going to be stuck in there due to the sealer used to prevent water coming into the boat. What I did was sprayed it with WD-40, then pushed and pulled on it for like an hour. No budge. So then I figured I would have to cut it. So I took a long 3/8 socket extension and wedged it between the upper unit and the cable, pulled down and it pulled right out. You will need to separate the upper and lower to get it out of the lower unit. Good Luck."
