I am looking to purchase a boat that was frozen from not being winterized. The motor was replaced and repaired. 9k of work was done to repair.

2.00 GSKT CYL HD.V6 CHV 914930 6.00 NGK ITR4A15 @4
2.00 MANIFOLD-EXHAUST
2.00 CLAMP
2.00 GASKET-ELBOW
2.00 GASKET-ELBOW
1.00 FILTER-OIL
4.00 OIL 4CYCLE 55GL
1.00 PARTS CLEANER
CYL HEAD-COMPLETE 1.00 PLUG-
INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET SET 2.00 SHUTTER KIT-WATER
IMPELLER
SEAL KIT-OBM
SLEEVE
ANTIFRZ(-100)55

Do you think being repaired from being frozen would be good and long-term? Should I just run away?

That how I’m feeling as well. If all the parts that were affected are replaced then there shouldn’t be any issues. Just wanted some other options before buying! Thanks for your response.

I would ask them to explain the items with an X-
- Did the exhaust manifolds crack? If so, sure, but they don't hold water.
- Why did they need to replace two clamps? Which clamps?
- Exhaust manifold gaskets- sure, they're not expensive.
- Parts cleaner? Is that part of the environmental charge? If so, that's ridiculous, because they don't use new fluid for every job.

- What sleeve? For a cylinder? That doesn't sound like a different engine.

Parts cleaner would also be listed as ----SHOP SUPPLIES by some, just a sneaky way to get a bit more revenue.------Next thing will be a labor rate of $40 / HR---, tax rate of $15 / HR---Shop overhead $10 / HR.----Receptionist $10/HR----Parts inventory fee $5 / HR on your invoice.

Where is tax charged by the hour and where is shop rate so low? Here, the lowest shop rate I can think of is around $80/hr. $40/hr may be what they pay a well-trained shop tech.

They didn't "replace" the engine, just the cylinder heads...apparently, they remove the engine from the hull to do the work.

The sad part it that the invoice states the core plugs were pushed out but I don't see anything in the invoice for inspecting the block or replacement core plugs....

I would not be in any rush to purchase it, and then only with more testing....

Come on guys, they took the previous guy to the cleaners and your looking for every little thing that was done itemized. They wanted 8250 and they worked backwards to get it to come out.

With only the core plugs being pushed out most likely they could have just put new ones back in and fired it up.

Agreed I see nothing about the block or intake manifold being replaced and if the cyl heads & exhaust froze it is very likely that the block & intake froze too. Prices? $1,300 for a Chevy 4.3 V6 cyl head? These can be bought remanufactured for $275-300 each!

Thank you for your help and opinion.

It does not matter what the mechanic makes / HR-----Some shops are approaching $200 / HR now to cover labour and OVERHEAD.-----Many shops in Canada have a 5 month season , expenses go on year round.

The invoice shows 'sleeve'- that tells me a cylinder cracked near one of the frost plugs. I had to pull an engine from a Ski Nautique for the same reason, as well as replace head gaskets because they overheated it the first time 9out that year. I wish I had photos of the Ultra Copper basket sealant that had squeezed out from the intake manifold and head......

The machine shop manager where I took it recommended sleeving and I was a bit skeptical, then he said "They do it every week in Nascar".

It ran great when finished.

Since we're all guessing, I'll guess the sleeve might be a speeding sleeve

But my guess was wrong
If you look up the part number for the "sleeve" its 816583 and its used on the Alpha drive ITEM 31 and cost $11 (charged double for it) and its made of plastic. So when the impeller was replaced they also replaced it

That's the plastic tube that connects to the copper line from the water pocket? Got it. I did't look too closely because I was using my phone.

I did see the line for the shutter valve- mine was burnt to a crisp by the previous owner, so I replaced it.

The only way that this deal would make sense is if you can water test the boat not just start it & run it on the water hose with no load. You are looking looking for water leaks on the outside of the engine and for water in the motor oil and cylinders. This is the only way you can tell FOR SURE that the block & intake manifold were not cracked when the engine froze and that the shop did the repairs RIGHT. So I’d wait till spring on this one if the lakes are frozen where you are…otherwise it seems quite risky given that the engine froze!

No warrantee? Can you put a refundable deposit on it to hold the boat and then make the deal contingent upon a successful water test?

I would ask for a quote comparing the cost with a long block, rather than repairing this one. Some suppliers of reman engines include a very good warranty.
