Boat fuel separator for BF30

I believe this is my inline fuel separator and I took the fuel lines off and there is no way to see if there is any water in it? I emptied it but for the most part it looks like gas. I don't want to buy a large one because I don't feel like I would need one of those big ones since I only have a small 30hp engine. I assume as long as this one is "emptied" it is fine but I cant tell. Is there another inline filter like this that I could buy that's a more "up to date"? I don't know what I would search for that. Thanks

That is just an inline fuel filter. It is not a water separating fuel filter. In fact, it looks like an aftermarket filter at that. The Honda filter is more translucent.

If you are going to put a water separating fuel filter in the line, it should be external from the engine and be one something like this. http://marine.honda.com/content/images/accessories/30 GPH Racor Assem.jpg http://marine.honda.com/outboards/accessories/fuel-system

If you use your motor a lot and regularly go through a portable tank of fuel every week or so, you could probably get by not having a water separator. If you have a built in tank, then you should use one.

Okay cool. Ya it did have a few little things in it so I figured it was too simple to be a water separator. I have a portable tank and the separators I see at West Marine or walmart are like 5 inches tall, which seems pretty excessive for my 6 gallon tank. If that's okay I may get one though, I just feel like it wont pull through right using that much gas. Not true?

You don't need a water separator. Like Mike said, run fresh gas when you go boating. Take the time to dump any leftover in your car before parking the boat for a couple of weeks or more and D.R.A.I.N. your carburetor float chamber. Doing those few small things will prevent 99.9% of any fuel system related problems. Running a can of Sea Foam to a tank of gas every so often doesn't hurt either.

Stale fuel and neglecting to drain the carb leads to grief in a fairly short time. Outboard gets pissed and refuses to go fishing with you!
