bless me, for I have sinned

My stb timing was set to 40 degrees BTDC.
Not sure when I had set it last, but sure enough, it was sitting about 8 degrees too advanced. Luckily, it is my worn engine, with somewhat low compression, and it has been running premium gas. I think the rusted timing marker metal indicator threw me off on the "backwards" engine. Anyway, the plugs all look ok, not a bit of aluminum! on the tips, so, I'm leaving for the Bahamas tomorrow am.

Yes, you have sinned, but perhaps not egregiously. I'm surprised it started O.K. (unless of course the base timing was not affected) and that a trained ear such as yours didn't notice a slight suggestion of pre-ignition, etc. However all appears to be well, and so I hereby bless you (and the rest of the fleet).

I'm in diesel land now where ignition timing is not something under my control (as if it ever was).

Best wishes,

Tom
