Hello, I'm new to Honda outboards, I was in the process of trying to remove the water pump housing when I popped the e-ring off the lower end of the vertical shaft. I then removed the propeller shaft and gears to find the broken clip. The slot for the e-ring is fine, but I kinda damaged the very end of the vertical shaft, there is still enough there to secure the e-ring, my question is. Is there extreme downward forces on the pinion gear?

Hi,
I can't answer your question with any quantitative force calculation numbers but it seems you probably already know there's "some".

If you are concerned at all about the e-ring being forced out of the slot during high speed operation, then I would suggest taking the shaft to a good machine shop and having that area welded and the slot re-worked.

It's either that or about $400 for a new one.

Trying to use it "as is" would be a crapshoot with a possible loud  Bang followed by a call for a tow in your future.

Sorry for the glum take but that's my honest opinion.

Good luck.
