BF40 Making noise in forward

Hello,
i have a BF 40 that I bought from a estate sale with very little hours. When I started it and shifted into forward it makes grinding noise. My other Honda does this just on the initial shift. This one seems like the shift rod is out of adjustment? And help would be very appreciated. Thanks

There are two places to check adjustments, before pulling the lower unit apart.

Check for proper adjustment of the vertical shift shaft where it connects to the lower unit. The following is a set of instructions on how to change water pump (although on a different engine). It has pictures as to where the junction is located just above the lower unit. One thing to note is the location of the bottom nut (small nut)...it should be about 1/3 inch from the end of the rod, then screw the upper nut (long nut) down to meet the small nut and tighten.

When you take these apart, check the spacing to see if it is off. If not, then one other adjustment can be made.

Remove the shift cable connection and make sure, first of all, the shifter itself is moving properly. Then, while the lower unit is in neutral and the shifter is in neutral, reconnect the shift cable at the engine.

Mike
