BF225 Replacing Cowling Seal and some rust

Ordering a new seal since mine is damaged. Where its damaged there is some rust. What do you do to deal with the rust before replacing the seal?

Assume the old seal pulls off and the new one just slide into place?

yes that's it, just slide the seal. before, clean the cowling edge with some cleaner.

Would seem I need to remove the rust and coat with protectant or rust going to get worse

The rust is from the seal itself, just clean it off the cowl.
