Beep Beep Beep alarm - intermittent, not constant

I've got a 1994 mercury 40 hp 4 cylinder 2 cycle outboard with the oil injection tank on my pontoon. When I started it the other day for the first time this summer right away I got the intermittent alarm sound. According to the manual, this warning is for the oil system, not overheating, which it couldn't have been overheated anyway because I had just started it. And of course I have plenty of oil in it.

When I disconnect the wires coming out of my oil reservoir, the alarm stops. Before I order a new tank assembly, does it sound like it is most likely the float in my oil tank?

Otherwise, it seems to run OK with the usual blue smoke coming out the exhaust and plenty of water out the pee hole.

Thanks
Gary
