BB 454 Gen IV (Mark IV) - Pertronix distributor

Hi first thanks for accepting me in this forum.
I'm Italian and owner of a boat with 2 x BB 454 Gen IV (Mark IV) 1973 engines, Actually i'm rebuilding it and i got 2 new blocks remanufactured from USA plus all the other necessary parts (like the new distributors in this case).
I did buy 1x Pertronix D209800 and 1x Pertronix D200810 (1xSTD and 1xREV rotation ). Now the mechanic here is stopping on the Pertronix settings ... they have a doubt on the spring and limiters for the maximum mechanical advance (none 12°/blu 16°/red 20°) to use for this model of engines.
We saw from documentation that the defualt is the silver spring as per attached picture (extract of installation manual).
From orginal specs the blocks are for 4.500 rpm and are equiped with 4BBL Rochester.
Can someone help us ? Is the default silver spring the correct one to use ?
in this case wich limiter 12°, 16° or 20° should be used ?

Replaced both with pertronix D200811 last year. 1990 BB454 Mark IV motors. Went with them as shipped (silver spring). Set static timing as per manual, did fine all year. Both my distributors were standard rotation even though one motor is reverse rotation. Good luck with your rebuilds.

DO NOT........ repeat.... DO NOT haphazardly replace or change the flyweight return springs without the aid of a Sun, Allen or King distributor machine, and a person who knows how to use one and who knows how to set these up as per OEM Marine specs.

Find out the OEM specs for the advance curve and the advance limit, and the RPM at which the Full In advance is to occur.
DO NOT deviate from this.


Also note that the Marine advance curve will not include BASE advance shown in the graph.
So..... if the mechanical advancing system offers 12*, 16* or 20*......, BASE advance must be added to these values.

In other words.... if you set these up for a mechanical advance of 20*, and if BASE is to be 8*, your total will = 28* at the RPM for Full-In.
