"1989 fisherman 185 4cyl volvo penta AQ131D. I ran the boat often from last may until feb of this year, parked it for 2 weeks after an overheating issue, found that the pipe coming off the heat exchanger to the manifold was full of scale deposits from the exhaust. I cleaned it out and cleaned the exhaust extensively. started the boat, no heating issue. The boat sat for another week or two and I hooked it to the truck and moved down the driveway. I normally start it before going out to warm it up. It starts hard in the cold and like every other time took two or three tries to get it to run. It ran then stalled and would not start again, the sounds at starting are normally that of a hard engine turn over which I was used to, then it went to a soft sound almost like there was no compression. checked compression all cylinders at 120psi, had a new marine battery installed, new points, condensor, plugs, and had the alternator rebuilt. Even drained the fuel tank and repaced with clean fuel. Fuel pumps to the carb no problem, has spark. boat ran in drive way on three separate occasions, then I went back in about an hour to restart, fired right up and then ran about 5 minutes and cut off? won't start and now it is doing the same thing it did before, what could the cause be that it won't stay running? Ignition Switch? the cap and rotor and wires all appear in good condition. Maybe the coil is working intermittently? Nope, replaced that yesterday, same thing. Is there anything else? What about the little breaker near the starter that has a red button with 40 on it? Also, if the exhaust manifold is not completely sealed up tight would this cause the engine to draw too much air and not start? or give it weak compression (at least that's what it sounds like. kind of like the starter didn't engage and the turnover is soft, i know the starter is engaged because everything turns. checked sparks at coil after replacing everything checks out ok? Could it be a fuel pump even tho gas is coming out when I push the throttle? Ignition switch? I am stumped........Help please. This is getting more expensive by the day. thanks. Dennis"
