"I have a cracked block in my old 95' 4.3GS Volvo Penta I/O, now I am researching and considering an engine swap to the almost complete 5.7 Marine no exhaust manifolds but the carb and intake and dist and plugs are already there. I don't know of anything other than the exhaust manifolds that I should need that can't come off the 4.3. Will the drive handle the extra HP and TQ?"

"The drive will handle the extra power, but you will have to change the gears in the lower unit. The gear ratios are different for V6 and V8 applications."

"Gears huh. Is this a DIY yourself project, or a dealer thing? Why is there a gear difference, I figured as long as the operating RPMs were the same, the gears would follow suit..."

"Sorry to disappoint you, but your concept does not match reality. It is like in cars, different engines have transmissions with different gear ratios. According to Seloc, the gear ratio for a DP coupled to a 4.3GS is 2.30:1, and 1.95:1 when running a V-8. However, you may want to check with a VP dealer which set of gears is correct for your new intended application.

Regarding difficulty to do the job, the Seloc manual describes it as "moderate", but you may want to read through it first and see whether your concept of "moderate" is the same as Seloc's."

"Just an Update--
I have talked to several local boat shops about the gear switch in the drive. They all are telling me to leave the current gears in place, and that they install the gears I have into their v8's too to compensate for the elevation here. (About 5000 feet)"
